The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has adjusted the 2020-2021 athletics calendar in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The major decision was to temporarily implement four shortened sports seasons spanning from early September 2020 to the end of June 2021.

“Since March, the philosophy of our Association has been to allow students every chance to participate,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “We’ve asked our Executive Board and planning committees to be as creative as possible in allowing for those opportunities. These are tough and unprecedented decisions to make, but it has been inspiring to see so many people around the state come together to work on behalf of students.”

All details pertaining to this athletics calendar are tentative, and will be contingent on county-by-county progression through the phases laid out in Governor Inslee’s Safe Start plan over the coming weeks.

All sports will have one week of preseason training (except football, which will have two weeks). Competition may begin at the end of the second week. Following the shortened season, each sport will have one week of WIAA postseason events for all sports (except football, which will have two weeks).

Lakeside’s sports offerings will compete in the 2020-2021 WIAA calendar as such:

WIAA Season 1: (September 7 – November 8)

Girls Swim and Dive**

Cross Country

Golf (Alternative Season)

** The viability of girls’ swim and dive taking place in WIAA Season 1 is dependent on more information from the Department of Health.

WIAA Season 2: (January 4 – March 7)

Boys Swim & Dive

WIAA Season 3: (March 1 – May 2)

Girls Soccer

Football (February 22 – May 9)

WIAA Season 4: (April 26 – June 27)

Track & Field

Boys Soccer

For boys and girls lacrosse teams, which are not affiliated with the WIAA, efforts are being made to align seasons with the WIAA’s Season 4 timeline.

Crew teams must continue to wait until Phase 3 of Governor Inslee’s Safe Start plan to begin practices.

Director of Athletics Chris Hartley is in continuing conversation with the WIAA, the Metro League, and Lakeside School leadership to further understand how this information will be applied at Lakeside.
